Location: Hythe Alberta, 1 hour from Grande Prairie

Description of operation:

Operating under the name of Homesteader Bison, we, Glenn and Eldine Kjemhus with Greg and Kerri Kjemhus operate a 300 cow Bison herd and finish the 2 year old animals. We grow hay, fescue grass for seed and hay, and some field crops such as oats, peas and canola. Glenn and Eldine Kjemhus also operate Glendean Farms which markets bison cuts and sausage mostly through the Grande Prairie Farmers Market year round. They also work in close partnership with Valta Bison – Gil and Darlene Hegel – who have a 100-150 cow herd of buffalo.  They have various retail locations with bison meat at the Calgary Farmers Market, Valta Bison Farm Store in the Ramsey areaof Calgary. Together Glenn and Eldine and Gil and Darlene also own a separate company that sells bison, elk, pork, lamb and goat raised within Alberta and sold at Sweetgrass market located at the west end of Calgary.

Length of apprenticeship: negotiable

Number of apprentices sought: 1-3

Areas of potential apprentice specialization:
Marketing could include sales, transporting product, putting order together, meeting customers. On farm machinery tractors, hay equipment, combines, fencing, haul buffalo, feed and work with buffalo, rotational grazing.

General work expectations:

8 hours during slower season, 10-12 hours during harvest and haying.

Minimum expectations: 18 years of age, drivers license, ability to do manual
labour.
